Welcome to the ‘Cyber’ Keith Lodge of Peterhead No.56

From the Right Worshipful Master Bro. Jonathan Brown & the Brethren of the Keith Lodge, welcome to our home in cyberspace. Hopefully you will find our website both useful & informative, however if you have any queries or comments please feel free to contact us.

To the Brethren of To-Day

The series of events in the pages that follow should not be looked upon as something of the dead past. They tell the story of a Lodge whose greatness does not rest upon age or material wealth. But upon the vigour as revealed by its Brethren who have created the spirit that it possess to-day.

I would like you to come with me and mingle for a while with our Brethren of yesterday. Let us enter the old Mason Lodge and listen to them as they are swayed by the emotions, prejudices and customs of their times. Aye and we may hear the crash of the sea against its stout walls.

As we look back over these 200 eventful years with pride, we shall realise that while traditions and customs have changed, the character of the Lodge remains as it was.

James A. Wood
Depute Master – 1954

The above is an extract from the Bicentenary Celebration & serves as a perfect introduction to the Lodge to both fellow Brethren & Visitors to our website, the year 2014 marked our 275th Anniversary of the Keith Lodge from its foundation date of the 13th April 1739.

The same charisma of the Keith Lodge continues to this day. It has survived continuously for the last 275+ years because of the commitment of our Brethren. Our Lodge has taken a dynamic approach to changing times and with your continued support it will survive through to Time Immemorial.

What Is Freemasonry ?

It is the world’s oldest and largest fraternity (Often referred to as the ‘Craft’), It has approximately four million members worldwide from all walks of life. Its purpose is to promote the bonds of friendship, compassion and brotherly love, Politics has no role in it. Neither is it a religion as some would have you believe, but rather a friend and promoter of all religions which are based on the belief of One Supreme Being, Atheism and Masonry are not compatible. Regardless of their position in society, Freemasons meet as equals. One of the most fascinating aspects of Freemasonry has always been how so many men from so many different walks of life can meet together in peace, never discuss politics or engage in religious debates, conduct their affairs in harmony and friendship, and call each other “Brother”.

I have read in many sources on the internet that Freemasonry is a ‘secret society’, If this was indeed the case would you be reading this ? Masonic buildings are often decorated with signs & emblems of the craft, We regularly advertise in local press regarding lodge meetings & social events. We are not a secret society, We are a society with secrets.
The exact origins of Freemasonry have been lost in time, It is a topic of which there is a lot of speculation, It is never the less the oldest Fraternity in the world today. Its members have ranged from Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers & Celebrities, Its influence has spread across the four corners of the globe and many a freemason has changed the course of history. Yet most people are perplexed by the craft which leads to speculation, misinformation and rumours, So don’t always believe what you hear from a ‘Non-Mason’ as it is most probably inaccurate information at best, Instead if curious about Freemasonry seek out a brother you know of, or ask your friends & family if they know a mason to whom you could talk with (you may be pleasantly surprised as to how many people you know are freemasons & you just didn’t know they were), alternatively contact a lodge in your area and I am sure they will be more than happy to assist you.
If you feel uncomfortable approaching anyone about your curiosity in Masonry feel free to email me and I will try my best to assist you in anyway I can.

What Masonry IS:

It is a voluntary association of men.
It is a system of moral conduct.
It is a way of Life.
It is a fraternal society.
It is religious in its character.
It teaches the Golden Rule.
It seeks to make good men better men.
It teaches morality through symbolism.
It uses rites and ceremonies to instruct its members.
It is based on a firm belief in the Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of Man, and the Immortality of the Soul.

What Masonry IS NOT:

It does not solicit members.
It is not an insurance or benefit society.
It is neither a religion nor a creed, not a religious order.
It is not a charity organization, but makes charity a duty.
It is not organized for profit.
It dictates to no man as to his beliefs, either religious or secular.
It seeks no advantages for its members through business or politics.
It is not a forum for discussion of religion, politics or other partisan affairs.
It is not a secret society, as it does not conceal its existence or purposes.
